Welcome back to my 30-day Dutch food challenge ! After an exciting first week filled with delicious Dutch breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and snacks, I’m diving into Week 2 !

This week, I’ll continue exploring more traditional and popular Dutch dishes, from sweet treats to hearty meals. It’s all about experiencing the rich and unique flavors of Dutch cuisine, one day at a time. So, let’s see what tasty surprises Week 2 has in store!

DAY 9 :

 

Breakfast: Beschuit met Kaas

Beschuit is a traditional Dutch rusk, which is a twice-baked, dry, and crunchy bread, similar to a thick cracker. For breakfast, it’s often topped with a slice of Dutch cheese, such as Gouda or Edam. The combination of the crispy rusk and creamy cheese makes for a light but flavorful start to the day.

Lunch: Worstenbroodje

Worstenbroodje is a savory pastry filled with a seasoned sausage, wrapped in a soft dough, and baked until golden brown. It’s similar to a sausage roll and is a popular snack in the Netherlands, especially in the southern regions. The sausage is typically made from a mix of pork and spices, making it a tasty and convenient meal.

Snack : Dutch Apple

Dutch apples, like the popular Elstar or Jonagold varieties, are known for their crisp texture and sweet, slightly tart flavor. They are a healthy and refreshing snack, perfect for a quick energy boost between meals.

Dinner : Kapsalon

Kapsalon is a popular Dutch fast food dish that originated in Rotterdam. It consists of a base of fries topped with döner kebab meat, covered with a layer of melted cheese, and finished with a fresh salad of lettuce, tomatoes, and cucumbers. The dish is typically served with garlic sauce and chili sauce, making it a flavorful and hearty dinner.

 

DAY 10 :

 

Breakfast: Uitsmijter

An Uitsmijter is a traditional Dutch breakfast dish made with fried eggs served on slices of bread, often with ham and cheese. The eggs are typically cooked sunny side up, with runny yolks. It’s a simple yet hearty meal, commonly enjoyed as a breakfast or even lunch.

Lunch: Kaasbroodje

Kaasbroodje is a puff pastry filled with melted Dutch cheese. The pastry is flaky and golden, while the cheese filling is warm and gooey. It’s a popular quick lunch or snack, perfect for cheese lovers.

Snack: Roze Koek

Roze Koek, also known as Glacé Koek, is a small, round sponge cake topped with a layer of pink fondant icing. It has a soft and airy texture with a sweet flavor. It’s a popular snack often enjoyed with a cup of coffee or tea.

Dinner: Discodel

Discodel is a Dutch snack that consists of a fried meat patty, usually a minced meat mixture, topped with colorful sprinkles known as disco dip and served with fries. It’s typically accompanied by various sauces such as mayonnaise, ketchup, or curry sauce. This dish is a fun and playful option for dinner.

 

DAY 11 :

 

Breakfast: Broodje Hagelslag Puur

Broodje Hagelslag Puur is a Dutch breakfast staple consisting of a bread roll topped with butter and pure (dark) chocolate sprinkles, known as hagelslag. The sprinkles melt slightly on the buttered bread, offering a delightful mix of textures and the rich taste of chocolate.

Lunch: Frikandelbroodje

Frikandelbroodje is a puff pastry filled with a frikandel, which is a Dutch minced meat sausage. The pastry is baked until golden and crispy, while the filling is savory and spiced. It’s a popular lunch option, combining the flaky pastry with the flavorful sausage.

Snack: Mergpijpjes

Mergpijpjes are small, cylindrical cakes filled with a layer of marzipan or almond paste and covered in a thin layer of chocolate. The combination of soft cake, sweet marzipan, and chocolate coating makes it a delightful snack.

Dinner: AVG Gehaktbal

An AVG meal stands for Aardappel, Vlees, Groenten, which means potatoes, meat, and vegetables. The gehaktbal is a traditional Dutch meatball made from a mixture of minced beef and pork, seasoned with breadcrumbs, onions, and spices. It is typically served with boiled or mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables like green beans or carrots. This combination is a classic and balanced Dutch dinner.

 

DAY 12 :

 

Breakfast: Speculaas

Speculaas are spiced shortcrust biscuits made with a blend of spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and ginger. They are crunchy and often shaped with traditional patterns. Typically enjoyed with coffee or tea, they bring a warm, aromatic start to the day.

Lunch: Saucijsbroodje

Saucijsbroodje is a sausage roll made with a puff pastry filled with seasoned minced meat, usually pork. The pastry is baked until golden brown and flaky, making it a savory and satisfying lunch option.

Drink: Dutch Peach Water 

Dutch Peach Water is a flavored water with a light, natural peach taste. It’s a refreshing and hydrating drink, perfect for accompanying meals or as a standalone beverage during the day.

Dinner: Erwtensoep

Erwtensoep, also known as Dutch pea soup, is a thick and hearty soup made from split peas, vegetables like carrots, celery, and leeks, and often includes pieces of pork or smoked sausage. It is traditionally served with rye bread and is a warming and filling dish, especially popular in winter.

 

DAY 13 :

 

Breakfast: Albert Heijn Coffee

A simple start to the day with a cup of Albert Heijn Coffee, known for its smooth and rich flavor. This popular supermarket coffee is enjoyed black or with milk and sugar, providing a quick caffeine boost to kickstart the morning.

Lunch: Panini Tosti Ham Kaas

Panini Tosti Ham Kaas is a toasted sandwich made with ham and melted cheese, pressed in a panini grill. The combination of the crispy bread and gooey cheese makes it a popular choice for a warm and satisfying lunch.

Snack 1: Oude Kaas

Oude Kaas is aged Dutch cheese known for its firm texture and strong, nutty flavor. It is often enjoyed in small slices or cubes, sometimes paired with mustard or bread. It’s a perfect savory snack for cheese enthusiasts.

Snack 2: Bitterballen

Bitterballen are small, deep-fried balls filled with a thick meat ragout made from beef or veal. The outside is crispy, while the inside is soft and flavorful. They are commonly served with mustard for dipping and are a popular snack in Dutch pubs.

Dessert: Vla

Vla is a smooth, custard-like dessert available in various flavors such as vanilla, chocolate, or caramel. It’s creamy and sweet, often enjoyed on its own or with some whipped cream. It’s a classic Dutch treat to end the day on a sweet note.

 

DAY 14 :

 

Breakfast: Eierkoek

An Eierkoek is a light, round cake made with eggs, sugar, and flour. It has a soft, sponge-like texture and a mildly sweet flavor. It’s often eaten plain or with a little butter, making it a simple and light breakfast option.

Lunch: Kibbeling at @kibbelingboetiek_amsterdamsche

Kibbeling consists of bite-sized pieces of white fish, like cod or haddock, coated in a seasoned batter and deep-fried until golden and crispy. It’s typically served with a garlic or tartar sauce for dipping. A popular Dutch street food, it’s delicious and satisfying.

Snack: Stroopkoeken

Stroopkoeken are two thin cookies with a layer of sweet syrup in between. They are chewy and slightly crunchy, offering a rich caramel flavor. Perfect as a snack with a cup of coffee or tea.

Dinner: AVG

The traditional AVG dinner includes normal potatoes, a serving of meat (such as a pork chop or chicken breast), and cooked vegetables like green beans or carrots. It’s a simple, balanced meal that is a staple in many Dutch households.

 

DAY 15 :

 

Breakfast: Appelflap

An Appelflap is a triangular puff pastry filled with spiced apple pieces, often with a touch of cinnamon and raisins. It is baked until golden and flaky, with a sweet and tangy filling inside. It’s a delicious and satisfying breakfast treat.

Lunch: Weird Frikandel Broodje

This lunch features a unique take on the classic Frikandel Broodje, a pastry filled with a frikandel sausage. It may have additional ingredients or unusual flavors, offering a different twist on this popular Dutch snack.

Drink: Dutch Beer

A cold Dutch Beer pairs well with lunch or as a refreshing drink on its own. Beers like La Trappe, Heineken, Amstel, or local craft beers are popular choices, offering a light and crisp flavor.

Dinner: Friet Stoofvlees

Friet Stoofvlees is a dish consisting of crispy fries topped with a rich, slow-cooked beef stew. The stew is made with tender beef, onions, and a flavorful sauce, often with a hint of beer or mustard. It’s a hearty and comforting meal that combines the crispy texture of fries with the savory taste of the stew.
