Welcome to my Dutch Food Challenge ! For the next month, I will eat only Dutch food for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, and drinks. This is a fun challenge, so don’t take it too seriously! It’s a great way to try some delicious Dutch food and learn more about Dutch culture !
In this challenge, I’ll be tasting all kinds of traditional dishes, from sweet treats like hagelslag to savory meals like stamppot. In this article, you’ll see what I ate during the first week. Join me and discover some of the amazing foods from The Netherlands!

Breakfast: Hagelslag Melk
Start your morning with Hagelslag Melk, a traditional Dutch breakfast. It's bread with butter, topped with sweet milk chocolate sprinkles. A simple but tasty way to begin the day, especially with a cup of coffee or tea.
Lunch: Kibbeling
For lunch, enjoy Kibbeling, a popular Dutch street food. This is small pieces of white fish that are battered and fried until golden and crispy. It's usually served with a dipping sauce, like garlic or tartar sauce. A delicious and filling meal that leaves you satisfied for hours.
Snack: Appeltaart
In the afternoon, treat yourself to a slice of Appeltaart, a Dutch apple pie. It's made with sweet, cinnamon-flavored apples inside a crumbly crust. Perfect with a little whipped cream on top and a hot drink on the side. After this and the filling kibbeling, you might find yourself too full for dinner!
Dinner: Stroopwafel
Though a delicious Stroopwafel was on the menu for dinner, I had to skip it because I was still full from the hearty kibbeling and tasty appeltaart earlier in the day.
Breakfast: Hema Ontbijt
Start your day with a classic Hema Ontbijt, a simple but satisfying Dutch breakfast. It usually includes a fresh bread roll, a slice of ham or cheese, an egg, and a cup of coffee or tea. A balanced and filling way to begin your morning.
Lunch: Krentenbol met Kaas
For lunch, enjoy a Krentenbol met Kaas. This is a sweet currant bun filled with raisins, paired with a slice of Dutch cheese. The mix of sweet and savory makes it a light but tasty lunch, perfect for a quick bite.
Snack: Tompouce
In the afternoon, treat yourself to a Tompouce, a delicious Dutch pastry. This dessert has layers of puff pastry filled with sweet cream and topped with a smooth pink glaze. It's a favorite snack to enjoy with tea or coffee.
Dinner: AVG (Aardappel, Vlees, Groenten)
For dinner, a traditional Dutch AVG meal was served. This consists of boiled or mashed potatoes (Aardappel), a portion of meat (Vlees), and fresh vegetables (Groenten), offering a hearty and balanced way to end the day.
Breakfast: Appelflap
Start your morning with a delicious Appelflap, a flaky puff pastry filled with sweet, spiced apple. This classic Dutch pastry is lightly sprinkled with sugar and baked to golden perfection, making it a sweet and satisfying way to begin your day.
Lunch: Tosti Ham Kaas
For lunch, enjoy a simple yet tasty Tosti Ham Kaas. This grilled sandwich is made with ham and melted cheese between slices of toasted bread. Crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside, it's a perfect choice for a warm, savory lunch.
Drink: Fluitje
Refresh yourself with a Fluitje, a small Dutch beer traditionally served in a tall, narrow glass. Light and easy to drink, it's a great accompaniment to your meal or as a casual drink in the afternoon.
Dinner: Andijvie Stamppot
For dinner, enjoy Andijvie Stamppot, a traditional Dutch dish. This meal features mashed normal potatoes mixed with fresh endive (andijvie) and is often served with sausage or meat. It's a comforting and hearty way to end the day.
Breakfast: Brinta
Start your morning with a healthy bowl of Brinta, a traditional Dutch whole grain wheat porridge. It's warm, creamy, and packed with fiber, perfect for a nutritious start to the day. You can enjoy it with milk and a little sugar or honey for added sweetness.
Lunch: Rest of Andijvie Stamppot
For lunch, enjoy the leftovers from yesterday’s Andijvie Stamppot. This hearty dish of mashed normal potatoes mixed with fresh endive (andijvie) is just as delicious the next day and makes for a filling midday meal.
Snack: Gevulde Kanos
In the afternoon, treat yourself to a Gevulde Kanos, a delicious almond-filled Dutch pastry. Shaped like a small canoe, this treat is made from buttery dough filled with sweet almond paste, offering a perfect balance of flavors with a rich, nutty taste.
Dinner: Frikandel Pizza
For dinner, try something unique—Frikandel Pizza. This creative dish combines two Dutch favorites: pizza topped with sliced frikandel, a popular Dutch sausage. The savory flavors of the frikandel mixed with the cheesy pizza base make for a fun and tasty dinner.
Breakfast: Ontbijtkoek
Start your day with a slice of Ontbijtkoek, a traditional Dutch spiced breakfast cake. Made with rye flour and flavored with cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg, this slightly sweet and dense cake is perfect with a little butter spread on top, paired with coffee or tea.
Lunch: Broodje Fricandeau
For lunch, enjoy a Broodje Fricandeau, a sandwich made with thin slices of tender roasted pork, known as fricandeau, served on a fresh roll. This simple yet flavorful sandwich is light, but still satisfying, making it an excellent lunch option.
Drink: Heineken Beer
Refresh your palate with a cold Heineken Beer. This world-famous Dutch lager is light, crisp, and easy to drink, making it a great choice to enjoy with your lunch or as a casual afternoon drink.
Dinner: Dutch Buffet
For dinner, enjoy a Dutch Buffet, which offers a variety of traditional Dutch dishes. The buffet features typical Dutch snacks like bitterballen and kroketten, fresh vegetables including andijvie (endive), and a selection of Dutch desserts such as stroopwafels and poffertjes. Drink: Verse Muntthee
Refresh yourself with a cup of Verse Muntthee, or fresh mint tea. This simple yet fragrant drink is made by steeping fresh mint leaves in hot water, offering a soothing and naturally sweet beverage, often served with honey.
Dinner: De Muur en Frietjes
For dinner, try something fun and unique: De Muur (literally "the wall") and Frietjes (fries). De Muur refers to grabbing Dutch snacks like kroketten and frikandellen from a vending wall, a popular fast-food experience in the Netherlands. Pair it with crispy fries (frietjes) on the side for a casual, quick, and delicious dinner.
Breakfast: Gevulde Koeken
Start your morning with a sweet treat—Gevulde Koeken. These classic Dutch almond-filled cookies have a rich, buttery crust and a deliciously soft almond paste filling. Perfect with a cup of coffee or tea, they offer a satisfying start to your day.

For lunch, enjoy a warm Kaasbroodje, a savory pastry filled with melted Dutch cheese. This cheesy, flaky pastry is a simple but delicious meal, perfect for a quick bite during a busy day.
Drink: Dutch Water
Stay refreshed throughout the day with Dutch Water, known for its clean and high-quality taste. A simple and healthy drink to accompany your meals.
